Birte Nielsen - Tufting Technique

Tufting Technique

Our hand-tufted rugs are made in a small factory on the west coast of Scotland. The lead time is usually 8 weeks from acceptance of the design and approval of dyed yarns.

The following pictures illustrate the steps of the manufacturing process.

Diamond Design

Complex geometric design for a rug, 3m x 3m.

The design uses 7 colours.

Material: 100% pure New Zealand wool.

Pile height: 15mm.

Tufting the Design

Tufting is carried out from the back.

A scaffold and movable platform is used to reach the working area.

Tufting the design

Thin yarns run through a tufting gun.

Defining the Colours

The rug is latexed, dried, and removed from the frame to begin the finishing process.

Working from the front, the junctions between two colour areas are separated, which results in a more defined line.

This is optional depending on the desired finish required.

Shaving the Rug

Finally, the pile is sheared to the required quality and depth before leaving the factory.
