kNOT was designed in 1961 by two Danish architects Hans Haugaard
and Niels Esman. Since they were busy pursuing their architectural careers
and the necessary materials were not available, the project was shelved.
Now, with modern compounds, the dream has become a reality,
forty-odd years after it was first conceived.
The lamp was designed using a single band
of material wound around itself five times. This created an interlocking,
organic shape, embodying the "golden ratio" (phi), which can be found
sixty times in each luminaire.
When not lit, the natural contours of the lamp form an aesthetic
sculpture which is transformed when lit to show the interaction between
the different layers and their luminescence. The effect is striking.
Now available as a table lamp and a pendant in two sizes,
in polycarbonate shade and polished aluminium fittings.
